I have been a Nine Inch Nails fan since I can remember listening to music. Even before I was "allowed" to listen to them, I managed to get tapes from friends and listen when Mom and Dad weren't around. Through the years it feels like NIN music has grown right along with me, becoming more mature in tone and staying pleasant to my ears. Even today, I can listen to any release from the past and enjoy it as much as I did the first day I got it.
Needless to say then, I was very excited when Trent started hinting at a new project. I had my fingers crossed for either a new album or tour. I had no idea what the album would be or how it would be distributed, but I knew it would be different because of the recent part with Nothing records.
Although the website was slow that night, I kept fighting until I got the record. Listening to it, I can't help but say it might be one of my favorite NIN releases. I say that every time a new NIN record is released and maybe it's just because Trent always seems to put out exactly what type of music I need.
Nonetheless, this album is spectacular. It is sprawling much the way I felt The Fragile was and I love that ever song is a unique experience. Each song is a unique experience and the album art that accompanies the download seems to fit the music perfectly. The music has been playing since the second the download finished and I can't imagine it's going to stop for quite a while.
Besides the high quality of the music, I think the method of distribution was perfect even though it had some bugs at the beginning. If the release of Niggytardust was a successful failure, this release reflects all of the lessons learned there and is a complete success in my eyes. For $5, I hope a lot of people consider how much high quality music they're getting, not to mention the unbelievable images that accompany the download.
If this is the future of NIN, then Trent hasn't lost anything since the very beginning.
